The preferred fuel processing process for pure hydrogen production in large scale is the SMR (Steam Methane Reforming) process. Worldwide many large installations have been build and supply 24/7 hydrogen with purities of at least 99,9 % in volumes between 10.000 and 1.000.000 Nm3 per hour. The reason for choosing steam reforming is that it offers the highest yield of hydrogen. In small scale applications the chosen technology was quite often CPO-reforming or ATR-reforming, because the steam reforming didn't exist yet as a widely spread technology on small-scale.

HyGear therefore developed its propriatory HISR®-technology. This Highly Integrated Steam Reforming technology offers the best of both worlds. The HISR®-technology is an advanced form of steam reforming where the heat is directly fed into the catalytic reactors with an efficient integrated heat exchanger.
